While working hard is important, working hard does not always mean working smart.
Facility managers face the risk of employee injury, no matter the industry or size of the business. For employees involved with material handling, the risk is even higher. The costs of workplace injuries include low employee morale, decreased productivity and lost work days on top of the financial costs of workman’s compensation.
When looking at workman’s compensation numbers, manual material handling is one of the top risk factors for workplace injury. In fact, four out of five workman’s compensation claims are for musculoskeletal injuries, and one third of each workman’s compensation dollar is paid for lower back injuries. Back pain also accounts for 187 million lost work days each year, and push/pull injuries have an average insurance payout of $11,800.
The Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) reports that manual material handling contributes to a large percentage of over half a million cases of musculoskeletal disorders reported annually. To reduce risk of injuries related to manual material handling, the CDC recommends the following:
Train employees on proper equipment use and appropriate work practices
Push and pull equipment with the entire body instead of with just the arms and shoulders
When pushing or pulling, use both hands when possible
To move heavy loads over long distances, reduce the load or use motorized equipment
Motorized material handling equipment can help employees increase productivity and efficiency, while also promoting safety through injury prevention. With an ergonomic design and powerful load capacity, motorized material handling carts allow employees to focus on efficiency and speed while drastically reducing risk of musculoskeletal injury.
Amigo Mobility International, an Alliance Purchasing Cooperative preferred vendor, recently launched a new line of motorized material handling carts. The carts were specially designed with a powerful load capacity, but with a smaller footprint for easy maneuvering in a variety of industrial, commercial and hospitality environments. Amigo carts are ergonomically designed and easy to use, without any formal training required.
